ABC 17 News is looking for a NEWS DIRECTOR to maintain its status as market leader and build it for future success in Columbia-Jefferson City. The successful candidate will have experience overseeing a talented team of enterprising journalists and be accustomed to working in a research-driven, strategy-based multiplatform newsroom.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The NEWS DIRECTOR’S duties break down into three areas: 1) Editorial 2) Administrative and 3) Strategy. As the chief editorial voice, the position oversees all content generated on broadcast, digital and social platforms. The operation produces about 40 hours of local news on two network affiliates each week. Responsibilities include hiring, evaluating and scheduling all department employees. The position is in charge of creating the department’s annual budget and staying within expense parameters. We are looking for leadership by example when it comes to resolving employee problems and/or conflicts and making sure the department stays in compliance with laws and regulations established for the industry. The successful candidate will need to embrace the workings of a research-driven news department that emphasizes source cultivation, investigative journalism and breaking news on all platforms. The news director will be responsible for creating a strategic plan each year and overseeing its implementation.
SKILLS:
The right candidate must be a proven leader who has good rapport with staff. He or she should have excellent organizational skills and superior news judgment. He/she will need to be innovative and a strategic thinker. The candidate must work well under pressure, foster cooperation in a stressful setting and meet strict deadlines.
HOURS/SCHEDULE:
This is a full-time, overtime exempt position that is part of the company’s management team. It is scheduled Monday through Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm with flexibility required by the employee.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A college degree in journalism, communication or a related field is preferred. Three years-experience in television news management as a news director, assistant news director, managing editor, investigative unit leader, executive producer or a similar role is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position will require operation of a company vehicle or a personal vehicle for business use. Candidate must pass a drug test, background check, and MVR check.
